How soft do you want your seating is a very good question to ask your self when furniture shopping. What is considered cushion comfort depends on your personal opinion. Everyone differs in what they feel is comfortable. Cushions compress differently according to your weight. Someone at a lower weight will feel that the cushion is firmer than someone heavier.
Say you like a seat that is not to hard or to soft, you will want a standard seat cushion as it will have a high-resiliency foam core wrapped in layers of Dacron polyester fiber. If you like a hard or firm cushion you will want to go with a firm seat cushion that has a firmer high-resiliency foam core wrapped with layers of Dacron polyester fiber.
Now if you like to sink in, a blend down seat cushion is what you want. They are known sometimes as feather soft, ultra down or comfort down and they have a softer feel. They are generally a premium Polly core surrounded by a combination of fiber, feathers and down encased in a down proof cover. These will also require more fluffing and have a much more relaxed look.
Some companies offer a spring core cushion wrapped in down, also known as luxury coil or spring ultra down. They have a coil spring unit surrounded by a cotton cover with baffle construction filled with feathers and down for softness. Again they require more maintenance, but you will get that sink in comfort.
All cushions will soften depending how much and how you use your furniture. Regular fluffing, rotating and vacuuming will extend cushion life and keep them looking fresher. And remember, all cushions require maintenance, how much depends on the fill used.
There are many sofas and chairs that you can get with down filled back cushions also. If you look at a piece of furniture that has one type of cushion and you want to change to another, it can change the entire look and feel. Please be aware of this before you consider the change. It is up to you how soft or firm you want your seat cushions.
