"ART", as defined in the dictionary: "according to aesthetic principles of what is beautiful, appealing or of more than ordinary significance".
"RUGS" are simply defined as "a heavy fabric used to cover the floor".
Well, I think you'll find whether your looking for something to invite you into your room or coordinate and pull together the furniture you already have, "Floor Art" is the answer.
Many people choose their "Floor Art" to reflect the colors they already have in the room. Some people however find a great rug and then design the room around that rug.
How do you choose the right "Floor Art"?
Choosing the right "Floor Art" depends on where you are in the decision process. If you are working with a room that has upholstery fabric already in it such as a family room or living room, or a dining room with upholstered chairs, or a bedroom with an existing bed covering, then the choice of an area rug is somewhat controlled or directed by the colors existing in the room.
The area rug that you are looking for, assuming it is not just a solid color, must contain one of three ingredients.
In the rooms given as examples above, a fabric, or fabrics already exists. Look at those fabrics and decide what are the three most prominent colors. Those are the colors that your eye considers are the most important to work with and therefore one or all of those colors should be prominent in your rug selection.
If the fabric pattern you are working with has 4, 5 or more colors and these are not the most prominent colors in the pattern and you try to select an area rug that uses these 4, 5 etc colors as the most prominent colors in the area rug, it will not work. Your eye will not understand or agree with your choice.
The whole situation changes when the room is empty and you see a rug that you just "must have!" Just reverse the procedure and look at the 3 most important colors in the rug and make sure that the upholstery fabric has these colors. If the fabrics don't have all three of the colors it must have the most important color.
Only you and your designer can determine that. It can be a fun process.
